Celebrating 100 Years of Glashütte Wristwatches

June 27, 2026

In a remarkable journey through time, Glashütte Original reflects on a century of wristwatch craftsmanship, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of horology.

The New Beginning

As the 1920s dawned, the Glashütte watch industry faced its greatest crisis. The German economy was in turmoil, and the demand for pocket watches dwindled. In response, pioneers in the industry sought to reinvent the future of watchmaking. This year, we commemorate the centenary of their bold vision, which transformed the landscape of timekeeping.

From Pocket Watch to Wristwatch

The Deutsche Präzisions-Uhrenfabrik Glashütte (DPUG) was established in 1919, aiming to consolidate the production capacities of struggling watch factories. Managed as a cooperative, it sought to rejuvenate the declining pocket watch market. However, the economic consequences of the First World War and subsequent hyperinflation posed significant challenges. By 1925, DPUG was the largest production cooperative in Germany, employing around 3,000 people, yet it faced bankruptcy proceedings due to mounting debts.

Vampirsky take

This centenary serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and innovation that define Glashütte Original. As we look back on a century of wristwatches, we celebrate not just the timepieces themselves, but the spirit of those who dared to dream amidst adversity.
